The future is in the hands of the young talents! - GENIUS programmes 2011-2024

The economic development of Transcarpathia depends on finding young people with outstanding knowledge and skills, discovering and nurturing young talents as well as helping young researchers. The search for and identification of young people with exceptional potential and their continuous development are now becoming a key factor in determining the competitiveness of a given region, in which various educational institutions and talent management organisations have a key role. It is for this reason that the Ferenc Rakoczi II Transcarpathian Hungarian College of Higher Education and the Transcarpathian Hungarian Pedagogical Association established the "GENIUS" Charitable Foundation, which, among other things, in the spirit of equal opportunities, carries out a wide range of talent management, development and talent search among Hungarian-speaking schoolchildren, university and college students and young researchers in Transcarpathia.

Our aim is to create an integrated system of talent support programmes, ensure equal access to talent support, increase the social responsibility of talented young people and value the work of talent support staff and organisations.  Likewise, we intend to provide as many opportunities as possible for talented pupils, students and researchers to broaden their knowledge and skills beyond the scope of their training.  Also, one of our objectives is to educate intelligent young people, the Hungarian intellectuals of Transcarpathia, and to bring together teachers who are committed to talent management in order to encourage them to think and work together.

The "GENIUS" Charitable Foundation, among others,  carries out the following activities:

Residential talent weekends in mathematics

The programme takes place within the framework of a 3x3-day course at the Ferenc Rakoczi II Transcarpathian Hungarian College of Higher Education. The programme is aimed at pupils in 5-11 forms. The schoolchildren who have won 1st-10th places in the Zoárd Geőcze and Viktor Terebesi Memorial Competition in Mathematics, organised by the Transcarpathian Hungarian Pedagogical Association are invited to this event. The aim of the programme is to deepen and broaden the participants' mathematical knowledge. During the weekends, the children are taught by excellent maths teachers who prepare them for the upcoming competitions. Between 40 and 50 participants take part in the event each year.

"Roots and Wings" Study tours and following in the footsteps of role models programme

The series of events promotes the idea of staying in the homeland. It consists of two sub-programmes:

Ez hát a hon – Transcarpathian ethnographic field trips, aimed at experiential learning, physical and mental recreation of students.

Following in the footsteps of role models - the aim is to meet famous people of Transcarpathian ancestry who can be a motivating influence for students.

In 2023, 394 participants took part in the series of 5 events.

On the occasion of significant anniversaries, special history lessons are held at the Beregszász Talent Point operated by the Foundation. The aim is to present the key events of our national history to students in an engaging and interactive manner. During the lessons, not only is knowledge conveyed, but there is also an opportunity for collective reflection, a deeper understanding of historical events, and active student participation, thus promoting the expansion of their knowledge and strengthening their sense of identity.

Ilona Zrinyi Transcarpathian Hungarian Specialized Course

Applications are open to full-time students in years 3-6 with excellent results, working on a unique science topic and having a tutor with a doctoral degree. The scholarship is awarded for 10 months of each academic year. Its aim is to support the most talented Hungarian-speaking students (in the fields of natural sciences and humanities) studying at higher education institutions in Transcarpathia and, as far as possible, to provide them with the necessary conditions for professional development to achieve outstanding results.

Scientific Debate

The aim of the Scientific Debate Day is to provide the Transcarpathian college and university students, i.e. the intellectuals who represent the future of Transcarpathian Hungarians, with broad knowledge and insight into the processes, problems and challenges of the world.

The theme of the Debate Day is always based on a significant event of the year that is of great historical and cultural importance. The Debates are opportunities to pay attention to our prominent historical figures, our roots and traditions, to highlight and pass on the spiritual values that remind us of our past and strengthen us.

Conference of Transcarpathian Scientific Student Circle

The Conference of Transcarpathian Scientific Student Circle (KTDK) is organised in May each year in cooperation with the National Council of Student Research Societies’ TDK Without Borders (HTDK) program, in line with the Day of Ukrainian Science.

The aim of the KTDK is to encourage the Hungarian-language professional self-education and the relationship building of students in higher education in Transcarpathia. It also helps to establish or deepen new academic and social contacts between students, young researchers and their host workshops.

Transcarpathian Talent Day

Every year, on the first Saturday in June, we hold a Talent Day, which brings together students from all the Talent Points. In addition to the end-of-year celebrations, various scholarships and awards are handed out.

The Professional Background of Talent Development

In order to increase the effectiveness of talent development, the Foundation operates the Transcarpathian Hungarian Scholarship Council, which is responsible for the fair and efficient distribution of scholarships in the region; the Transcarpathian Higher Education Talent Development Council, which aims to support outstanding students in higher education; and the Transcarpathian Talent Support Council, which defines the professional guidelines for talent identification and development. The Foundation also organizes and coordinates the work of the Talent Support Subject Coordinators, who ensure the professional foundations of the talent development programs.

These units work closely together to create broad opportunities for young people in the region to develop and showcase their talents.

All the programmes are supported by the Hungarian Government.
